On May 16, just a week after seeing her whole family on Mother’s Day, Paula Schwefel met her heavenly father in person. We lost a good friend, pastor, wife, sister, daughter, mother, grandmother and live-in director of The Matthew 25 Center in Burgaw, NC.
Paula managed the center operations with her husband Jerry. They steered fundraisers, ministered to guests and created many friendships. Paula become ill in late 2019. She fought a good fight, but her health was not to be restored with a transplant or any more hospitalizations.
This fundraiser is meant to provoke some thought as well as support for the center that meant so much to Paula.
First of all, Christianity – When God calls us to follow Him, He also instills in us the desire to express Christian love for all and that’s what Paula did with the guests who stayed at the center.
Second, is life – It’s cliché to say we don’t know when our time will come but for Paula it was only her 57th year of life, much too young, but she sure touched a lot of people during that time.
Third, is giving – Whether it’s time, money, prayer or all three, we are expected to give of ourselves whatever God has gifted to us. Paula and Jerry’s job was 24/7. While some would call it a job, it really is a calling. When you dedicate yourself to working for God, He expects no less.
Fourth and final is service – Serving includes those that society sometimes considers unworthy. Paula knew the value of all lives and the value of keeping those incarcerated in touch with their family, particularly their children.
We hope that this small collection of thoughts will give you some insight into how Paula spent the last seven years of her life and how much she meant to us and this mission. Paula was a dedicated and faithful servant of our Lord! We welcome you to visit our website www.matthew25center.org to learn more about what you might want to do.
