John Gryszowka was a man that was not defined by his diagnosis. For two years he underwent treatment for cancer. During that time he completed two consecutive years of the Jug End Loop 4.2 miler. First in jean shorts, the second in jeans, John was as tenacious and determined as they come. When he put his mind to something he did it. In 2019, I watched as John and his wife Charlene did a loop (one loop had over 700 feet of vertical climb) at Jug End Reservation together as their daughter was competing in the race. In 2020, he came back with dear friends and picked up an entourage almost ten strong. He was a little slower this year, but no less stronger. With tenacity, grit, and a warrior's heart, he made a loop with his following, all socially distanced, mask on. He came down the final climb and inspired every person who was there to greet him. John Gryszowka finished the 4.2 mile trail race, and earned his Champion's Jug. Though his race here with us is done, his journey is not complete. He has inspired the next generation to pick up where his story has ended. Like John, we wish to be strong-willed, caring, nurturing, and as gritty as we need to be. John did not shy away from difficult situations. He embraced them and showed how a warrior's heart transcends everything else. John's family wishes to make contributions to Moments House, a 501c3 organization in Berkshire County, MA that provides, love, support, and complementary classes and programs to those facing a cancer diagnosis as well as their caregivers. Moments House believes that we are "Stronger Together". Like John, they hope to empower and support their neighbors in times of need. All donations will go directly to Moments House, EIN: 27-5104006.
