Charlie deGarmo, aka Mr. deGarmo, Mr. D and to me, Dad, had many passions but his top three were his family, community, including the hundreds of students who passed through his classroom at Malibu Park Junior High for over twenty-five years, and rescue animals.
His passion for his beloved Malibu and helping countless young people ultimately led him to BIG Heart Ranch, where rescue animals and struggling families, children and individuals, provide caring and healing for one another. He loved when he was able to donate his pipe corrals to help house, Tennie, the blind mustang, Jed, the BLM rescue donkey, and Bella, Magic, Shadow and Sassy, the rescue mini horses.
However, it was Goliath, the draft horse, that stole his heart. Dad knew about hard work and he had such empathy for Goliath, who had spent his life as a carriage horse until he was too old to pull the weight. Goliath was sent to a “kill” auction where he was rescued by Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue and then brought to BIG Heart Ranch. He knew Goliath was special and, like my Dad, went on to help countless people heal and find their way through life's challenges.
I am my father’s daughter and I honor his dedication to the Malibu community through my work at BIG Heart Ranch. In remembrance of my father’s life and his devotion to helping rescue animals and our community, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to BIG Heart Ranch.
