On April 29th the Tucson community and International Rescue Committee (IRC) were saddened to learn of the tragic and sudden passing of Aster who is survived by her 12 year old son.
Aster was originally from Eritrea but spent many years in a refugee camp in Ethiopia before beginning her resettlement journey to Tucson last year. Her transition was an exceptionally difficult one. She tragically lost all of her children, except one, before reaching Tucson. Despite her trauma and hardship, she was a devoted, hard-working single mother and pillar of her community. She was known as a kind woman and caretaker, often comforting other refugees in her housing complex by bringing them tea and offering her support.
Aster’s passing has been a devastating shock to her family and friends who will mourn her loss. The IRC in Tucson is reaching out to ask for assistance in covering funeral costs for Aster. A donation of any size is welcomed and greatly appreciated. 100% of donations will go to funeral costs and any amount above what is necessary will help support other refugee clients at IRC in Tucson.
Aster will be greatly missed by her friends, family and the IRC community.
