The primary purpose of this charitable, not-for-profit organization is to infuse social justice into social and behavioral health by providing, HIV/STD, substance misuse and criminal justice prevention, education and advocacy through community efforts. Our board, staff and constituents all serve and interact throughout the community through partnerships, volunteerism, research participation, and giving voice to the needs issues and concerns of our community.
Imani Unidad, with the assistance of Unity Garden, seek to create a Peace Garden and Community Garden in Kennedy Park neighborhood, located on the westside of South Bend. In 2018, Imani installed four garden beds on the site. Our plan moving forward is to coordinate youth from the Martin Luther King Center next door to plant seedlings and decorate the garden boxes. Fliers will be distributed to residents of the neighborhood to increase awareness and participation. In September, we plan to stake and install the fence to enclose the site, purchase and install entry gates, install shrubs and perennials, and install entry signs. Equipment used for the garden will be stored at Imani Unidad. Imani Unidad has raised approximately $1000.00 for this project. Our organization has partnered with Unity Gardens to secure plants and some building material for the proposed project. Donations will assist us in landscape renovation which includes more flowers and bushes; the purchase of benches, fences, plaques dedicated to the memory of those lost in the community and scultpures.
Our ultimate goal is to create a Place of Peace within the community which will increase access to fresh foods, improve mental health and promote relaxation, and educate the public on environmental sustainability. Place of Peace will not only heal the community and bring fresh produce to an area which suffers urban blight, but will hopefully raise property values by repurposing an empty lot, as well as encourage local businesses to invest in the area and bring jobs to the community.
