Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know, every year for the past 10 years (this will be my 11th year) I have run the Disney World Half-Marathon in early January. In 2014 I raised money for the Scott Carter Foundation. That year the minimum amount I needed to raise was $1,000. This year, the minimum amount is $250.
The story of Scott Carter is truly amazing and the reason Disney World includes them in the small number of foundations that are selected to raise money for their foundation in the Run Disney Marathon/Half-Marathon. Scott Carter was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was only eleven years old. He not only courageously fought against his cancer but also took on what would seem an impossible challenge when he lost his good friend to the disease. Her loss broke his heart, and he turned his pain into a determined quest to find a cure for childhood cancers. He decided to make others aware of the enormous need to find a cure, and he garnered support from some of the biggest stars, including Michael Jordan, Garth Brooks, Mohammed Ali, and Mickey Mantle. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Scott Carter Foundation. His story is told in this powerful video narrated by his three young nephews - https://vimeo.com/2858861008. Once you watch this video, you will see why I want to support his wish and his memory.
I am also running for three other outstanding people, two of whom I have never met, but they are very special ~ First of all, my son-in-law’s (John Gabriel) mother – a wonderful, warm, kind, fun and generous woman with whom I was looking forward to making many great memories. She lost her fight against pancreatic cancer just recently, and we are all heartbroken. I’m also running for two fallen soldiers of the Army’s 101st Airborne, Santiago Halsel and Matthew Catlet – two dedicated soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we might enjoy freedom here in America. Scott, Kathy, Santiago and Matthew will be in my heart and mind as I run the race. Together, we will cross the Finish Line! On the back of my race shirt, in their honor, will be there names.
Thank you so much for your support!
