Meet Ike. Neil met Ike at Spring Creek Park on a 100 degree summer day in Houston, TX. Ike told Neil he’d just come from South Houston just to take a cold shower before he leaves. “Well where are you headed?” Neil asked. Ike told him, “Oh, back home. To New Jersey.”
“The state?!” Sure enough he was leaving in a few hours to bike BACK to New Jersey. He biked to Houston some ten years ago and was now hours away from starting his journey back home. Haven recently fallen on hard times, spending time on the streets, no job, etc.. he has nothing tying him here. While some of his family has passed away in NJ, some are still around. His story gripped Neil as he talked about how hard life hit him and how just headed home is sometimes what we have to do.
The trip will take him a few weeks time as he wants to take is slow and steady. “I really want to take my time and see things.” (not to mention the physical toll biking basically across the nation will take) He explained how he’d love to document the trip but he didn’t have a phone (aka 2019 camera) so Neil took Ike to the Boost store down the road and got him a quick set up. Now, he and Neil have exchanged info and Neil is going to be checking in with him on his trip back home. If you want, tune in with me! Follow Ike as he bikes home.
Neil discovered that Ike has a niece that is on the autism spectrum that goes to Bankbridge and he wants to see about raising funds for it. He has such a huge heart for this community.
