Hello, we are the Inland Empire Prism Collective (IEPC). Our mission is to empower LGBTQ youth throughout the Inland Empire by providing them with access to leadership development & supporting them as they organize action-based campaigns that confront the systems of institutional oppression that threaten our survival as queer people.
The Human Rights Campaign’s latest Municipality Equality Index assessed San Bernardino as being among the worst California cities for LGBTQ residents. The conversations we’ve been having with local queer youth only reinforce this as a daily truth. Despite policies existing at the California state level that are supposed to protect LGBTQ youth, local leadership isn’t prioritizing their wellbeing at the level that queer youth deserve.
IEPC aims to address this by directing our focus to the creation of a local LGBTQ youth movement that empowers young people to become active agents of change. Our youth are our future -- and in this socially conservative region where the disenfranchisement of our diverse communities is constantly under stress -- there must be a shift into providing equitable resources
We have set up this GoFundMe to grow our resources to financially support our initial efforts to build a campaign for highschool youth in the San Bernardino area. Donor funds will be put into unifying the LGBTQ highschool youth population through educational trainings on leadership development, intersectional & decolonialized approaches to community building and action organizing.
IEPC overall addresses a lack of significant social support and advocacy for LGBTQ youth in the Inland Empire. It is a challenge for queer youth to feel supported in their communities given a myriad of factors such as socioeconomic class standing, racial/ethnic makeup, gender presentation, immigration status, mental health.
