Youth Activism Society, (YAS), is a non-partisan, south-east Idaho based, youth-led organization that highlights the importance of getting Generation Z involved in their local community through volunteer work and activism! YAS stresses the importance of making sure high school students are active and well-informed on their political and socio-economic climate. YAS also works to get Gen Z active in volunteer work with local businesses in order to achieve their end goal of making change nationally by starting locally!
For the month of September, YAS has taken on a two-fold project that works to fight food insecurity in the state of Idaho. Partnering with JRM Foundation and Idaho Kidney Institute, YAS plans to raise $4,000 to fight food insecurity amongst patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease.
In 2017, it was estimated that nearly 1 in 8 Americans suffer from food insecurity, equating to nearly 40 million Americans and including more than 12 million children. Lacking proper nutrition deeply affects those who are suffering from chronic diseases especially, DM, COPD, Heart Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease. Not having access to healthy and nutritional foods leads to malnutrition which severely affects the outcome and mortality of patients with such diseases. This ultimately leads to a higher risk of death and prolong hospitalizations.
Along with fighting food insecurity amongst patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease, YAS plans to partner with Idaho Foodbank to raise $8,000 to fund their Backpack Program. The Idaho Foodbank Backpack Program works to provide nutritious food for children in South-East Idaho who suffer from food insecurity and do not have access to a sufficient amount of food throughout the school year.
Last year, the East Idaho Food Bank raised enough money to provide 17,500 backpacks in our community at $6.25 per backpack! The Youth Activism Society’s goal is to raise $8,000 this school year (equal to 1,280 backpacks). A donation of $300 will provide a student in our community enough backpacks of food for a whole year.
YAS hopes to raise $12,000 in total, $4,000 of which will go to patients who suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease and $8,000 for students in the state of Idaho suffering from food insecurity. Our efforts to help these programs can’t take effect unless we have the support of everyone in our community! :)
