It’s time…. Let’s build a monument to honor Ida B. Wells (1862-1931), the great civil rights pioneer, anti-lynching crusader and women’s rights activist. She was ahead of her time, but now it is long past time to honor her. While monuments abound in this country, including the confederate monuments now the subject of so much attention, few honor women - and even fewer honor our African American women heroes. We can begin to change that.
Please contribute today to honor one of America’s most important African-American women. We need your help to raise $100,000 toward our overall $300,000 goal to complete this project. We have commissioned world-renowned sculptor Richard Hunt to design and create the monument, which will also feature some of her most memorable quotes. This inspirational monument will be located in Chicago, not far from the home that Wells shared with her husband and family, and on the site of the now-demolished public housing development named for her shortly after her death.
