COVID-19 has hit everyone hard, and the loss of precious lives is absolutely devastating. While families all over struggle to make ends meet, families of children suffering from cancer are doubly burdened. One, they face the economic and health effects of COVID-19, and two, they suffer the extra burden and fear of caring for children already immunocompromised due to their illness and treatment. Those kids are especially susceptible to getting the virus that could easily kill them. In “normal” times, one or both parents of children with cancer have to leave their jobs to attend to the daily needs of their children who are isolated at home or in the hospital. Now, with COVID-19, many parents have either lost their jobs altogether or, if their job still exists, they cannot risk working for fear of contracting the disease and bringing it home to their children. These families are truly in dire straits.
We at I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation have been raising money for 14 years to find gentler treatments for childhood cancer so that the treatments can be gentler and less toxic. Now, during these difficult times, we feel the need to help families more directly with their immediate and substantial financial needs. We are hearing heart wrenching stories from the social workers and child life specialists at hospitals about the day-to-day struggles that families are enduring. Those stories spurred us to action and to help. They desperately need our help NOW!
Therefore, we have started the I Care I Cure. . . I Give To Families fund, and have teamed up with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (and hopefully other local hospitals as well) to distribute much needed gift cards (Target, Publix, Gas, etc.) to families whose children are currently being treated (inpatient and outpatient) for cancer. Though we know these are difficult times for everyone financially, we ask you to donate any amount of money you can manage to help these suffering families put food on their tables, and help ease their daily burden of caring for and worrying about their sick children.
We know how hard it is on childhood cancer families in normal economic times...it is hard to imagine how difficult their task is now. We hope you will join us in making a difference for these children and their families.
Thank you - I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation
