“What is art but a way of seeing.” – Saul Bellow
We want to give kids “new eyes” to experience Maine through famous Maine art. Beginning with Winslow Homer Game Loft kids will re-enact scenes from great Maine art as a way of seeing.
Few adults and even fewer youth know Winslow Homer’s contribution to American fine art or his connection to Maine. I am Art is experiential learning at its best.
I am Art is an outgrowth of the Game Loft program, I Know ME. We have found that Maine youth are not aware of their heritage as Mainers. Our focus to is get them to be “experts” in the state of Maine through field trips, discussions, study, and exploration. This six year program focuses on the people, places, and things that are important about Maine.
This program will help young people understand their connection to great art through the paintings of Winslow Homer. Homer’s home and studio were in Prout’s Neck and he painted many scenes of youth on the Maine coast. In this project we are re-creating some of Homer’s classic works using Game Loft students and local scenes. By being part of a re-creation of a famous painting and then seeing that re-creation as art our “models” gain a deeper appreciation for the work of Homer and other Maine artists. The re-creation photos will be displayed with prints of the original in an art show sponsored by the Game Loft. The “models” will travel to Prout’s Neck to see the original works of Winslow Homer and to more fully appreciate his influence on 19th century and contemporary art.
