Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Thank you for making our community one that welcomes and supports refugees and asylum seekers through both good times and bad. The response to our recent appeal for home furnishings and winter clothing donations for a new refugee family in our neighborhood was overwhelmingly generous.
We hope you will join us now in helping plan for the coming year. Many things that we had planned for 2020 had to be postponed, but we have learned a lot this year, and 2021 brings with it much hope.
Now, given President-elect Biden’s pledge to "set the annual global refugee admissions cap to 125,000" (almost 10 times the cap for the current year), there will be an increased need for co-sponsor organizations like ours to welcome and support families as they come to our country.
We are, therefore, excited to announce that in 2021, we plan to resettle another new refugee family. This is a huge undertaking, requiring significant funds, committed volunteers, and careful planning. It requires a search for affordable housing, potential jobs, and assistance with expenses in the initial months to make their transition successful. In short, it is an all-hands-on-deck endeavor.
We will also continue to support the families we already work with through this particularly difficult period in our country, by focusing on their most urgent needs: food, shelter, healthcare, and emotional wellbeing.
Finally, we are also working hard to support one of our families that is facing a life-threatening health issue this year, providing childcare and financial support to cover the father’s time off work to be able to accompany his child on hospital visits for treatment and surgery.
With your help, we can make these plans come true. Please help our local refugee neighbors by financially contributing, becoming a volunteer, or spreading the word. Donations can be made directly through our paypal link or on our gofundme page or by check. Please make checks payable to Hyde Park Refugee Project and mail to:Hyde Park & Kenwood Interfaith Council (HPKIC) 1448 E. 52nd Street, #117Chicago, IL 60615
Please also consider sharing this gofundme page. We couldn't do any of this without the generosity of the community!
Wishing you all health and safety in this time,
The Hyde Park Refugee Project Working Group
