The East Coast is in a state of emergency.

Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, on Friday morning with 90+ mph winds. Moving at a menacingly slow pace, Hurricane Florence is expected to dump 20-40 inches of rain over the Carolinas and mirror conditions that caused massive flooding in Texas after Hurricane Harvey. Several of GlobalGiving’s local nonprofit partners are responding and have asked us to help fund any necessary relief and recovery efforts on the ground.

At least 17 deaths have been reported since the slow-moving storm made landfall. Nearly 2 million people had to flee their homes, and about a million homes and businesses are now without power. This fund will support relief and recovery efforts in the form of emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine. If necessary, this fund will also support longer-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild. All donations to this fund will exclusively support any necessary Hurricane Florence preparation, relief, and recovery efforts in the United States.

Hurricane Florence is forecast bring devastating floods, storm surges, and hurricane force winds to the Carolinas. Relief efforts are underway to deal with this damage. Several of GlobalGiving's local nonprofit partners are preparing to respond and have asked us to help fund any necessary relief and recovery efforts on the ground.

All donations to this fund will support Hurricane Florence recovery and relief efforts in the United States. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once any initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support any necessary longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations responding to this forecasted disaster.

We believe that organizations that are deeply-rooted in local communities are best positioned to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like hurricanes. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, there's potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.
