About the Disaster
Dorian was the first major hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. On September 1, Dorian reached Category 5 intensity, making landfall in the Bahamas, and is the strongest known tropical system to impact the Bahamas. On September 3, Dorian began to move slowly towards the north-northwest. Three days later, Dorian made landfall in the U.S. at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Due to the prolonged and intense storm conditions, including heavy rainfall, high winds, and storm surge, damage in the Bahamas was catastrophic, with thousands of homes destroyed and at least 30 deaths recorded. Property damages were estimated at $7 billion for the Bahamas. Damage in the US is currently unknown.
