When I was seven years old I lost my mother to breast cancer. I still find it difficult to put into words how it was losing her at such a young age. I don’t remember much about her, but I am told stories about how wonderful a woman she was and how much she loved me. Several years later my father married a wonderful woman named Vicki. I didn’t know if anyone could ever take my mothers place, and Vicki told me she never could. But she came into our lives and immediately started to fill a void. I saw how happy my father was and she was a treasure to me. Then she got cancer. We started the process of chemo and treatment and I had watch the toll it took on her. It was not easy, but Vicki showed me how resilient she was and how she still put others ahead of herself during that time. Then Vicki beat it. She beat cancer. Vicki has been one of the greatest influencers and supporters of my life, and I almost lost her to cancer. There are countless people that reached out to help, and I believe that is one of the greatest supports one can have. And I have a chance to help future cancer patients. On October 13th I will be running the Chicago marathon to raise money for the Imerman Angels. The Imerman Angels provide FREE personalized one-on-one cancer support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. And in memory of my mother Susan McGahee and in honor of Vicki McGahee I will run this marathon so that others who are diagnosed with cancer can have the same support and care that my mothers had. All donations are appreciated, no matter how big or small. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you follow the link to donate. Here’s to 26.2 miles and to fighting and beating cancer.
