In this season of giving, let’s remember the vulnerable children in our midst. We at Howard Hanna Real Estate give back to our community by raising money for The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters through the Howard Hanna Children’s Free Care Fund. This fund partners with 12 children’s hospitals and related programs and activities in the areas where we live and work to assure that children never be denied the best medical care available, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. All of the money given through this fundraising page will go to CHKD.
CHKD opened in Norfolk in 1961 as the first freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital in Virginia and remains the only one to this day. Now it is building the state’s first pediatric mental health hospital and outpatient center to address children’s mental health needs. Eight to 10 children a day turn to CHKD’s emergency department for help with a mental health crisis, and there is a month’s-long waiting list for outpatient appointments. One in 5 children has a diagnosable mental health condition, yet, fewer than a fourth of those receive treatment. Among high school students, 17% considered suicide in the past year, and suicide is the second-leading cause of death among kids ages 10-24.
These needs have never been greater than during the coronavirus pandemic. In the past quarter, CHKD’s mental health team has seen a sharp increase in the number of children they are treating. Most at risk are children who already have mental health concerns, such as depression and anxiety, and children with changes in family circumstances, such as job losses. Will you help our children? Please GIVE GENEROUSLY and help us meet our goal.
