Melnea Cass (1896-1978) - The First Lady of Roxbury
“I am convinced that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can, for the harder I work, the more I live.”
“If we cannot do great things, we can do small things in a great way.”
A community organizer by excellence, Melnea Cass organized and volunteered on projects big and small to advance the rights of her people. Whether it was volunteering for the Harriet Tubman's Mothers Club, organizing the Boston local of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, fighting for women suffrage, or presiding over the Boston branch of the NAACP, she. She is Boston through and through. In fact, we have a boulevard named after her!
