I have been volunteering with Horizons for Homeless Children every Tuesday night for the past 8 ½ years as a Playspace Activity Leader (or PAL). It is a simple program with a huge impact- PALs go to their assigned shelter and play with the kids there.
Over 1,000 PALs are coordinated to serve at shelters across the state which translates to 680 hours of playtime each week. Having a safe space to play not only brings joy, it is crucial for healthy development. Homeless children have twice the rate of learning disabilities and three times the rate of emotional-behavioral disorders than children who are housed. The Playspace in each shelter is intentionally designed to meet the needs of trauma-affected children.
I am running the Boston Marathon in 2020 to raise awareness and to make a fundraising commitment for this incredible organization.
