Antartica is the most inhospitable continent on Earth. So, what better place to run a 26.2 mile marathon for Girls With Sole, and to serve as a living example of resilience for the girls? The Antartica Marathon presents a truly formidable challenge with an average windchill temperature of -20C. The event takes place at an altitude of 700 meters, and winds can blow from the Pole at a steady 10-25 knots. Also, forget about crowds cheering along the route. Participants must rely upon themselves to push onward in the hushed, indomitable surroundings.
As runners, we constantly move forward. Running teaches us to be resilient when pain or adversity challenges us. We feel the pain, but learn how to trust ourselves and dig down deep to uncover the solutions needed to improve our situation and keep moving forward.
But what if you don’t have the tools to cope with deep pain and trauma in a healthy and constructive way?
What if fitness, running, self-esteem, inner strength and self-awareness aren’t on your radar because you are in survival mode, or have never trusted yourself to be resilient or courageous enough to go deeper than the surface - to the place beyond the darkness - where hope and healing can be found if we just keep going.
Resilience isn’t like a default setting that goes into effect when it’s needed. It must be cultivated, focused upon, and practiced.
Hope is the tip of the iceberg! We have to believe we have the strength and resilience to endure before we can access and use it.
This is why Girls With Sole programs are so essential to the young women we serve. We provide the tools needed for girls who have experienced abuse of any kind (including human trafficking, emotional, bullying, physical and sexual abuse, witnessing violence and other forms of trauma) to foster hope, empowerment, resilience and courage - and to apply these lessons to their lives.
We envision a world where every girl thinks of herself as an athlete – and is inspired and nurtured in mind, body and soul – to achieve her fullest potential and inner most success. We call it Lacing Up for a Lifetime of Achievement.
Icebergs float all around Antarctica. 90% of the mass of an iceberg is underwater.
For Girls With Sole…HOPE is the tip of the iceberg! TOGETHER we can provide that hope, and show the girls that if they dig down deep, they will see everything they are capable of and can achieve.
