Twenty-six years ago, a friendship between two women launched a wild dream into reality. Carol and Trish shared a passion for horses and helping people physically, mentally, and emotionally. Therapeutic riding was a natural and obvious combination. Their vision started falling into place, "as if God had a plan for them" - finding an area that needed their service, a great location for the program, and even sending people who could help! Maria, a former elephant trainer, quickly became a necessary member of the team as a registered therapeutic riding instructor and Special Olympics coach.
Therapeutic riding is an equine-assisted activity for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of individuals with special needs. The freedom of riding a horse has many therapeutic benefits, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. At Hoofbeats, the healing process happens out of the saddle as well. Riders and volunteers build trust with the horses and form lasting friendships with each other. This bond of trust and compassion has created the community of Hoofbeats.
Horses are natural healers. These majestic creatures help restore the connection with our hearts, and aid in profound healing breakthroughs. Horses intuitively recognize blocks in our physical bodies and energy fields. Working with horses can powerfully accelerate the healing journey. However, horses that do a lot of healing work, need support too.

“There is something incredibly special and empowering about commanding the respect of an animal that weighs over ten times more than you. Horses are very sensitive to fear and to confidence. They are placing their trust in you. So you have to trust yourself.” - Carol Branscome, Director
"This is a place of extraordinary kindness. At Hoofbeats, every person – whether rider or volunteer or family member – is valued and celebrated for their unique experiences and skills. Diversity is our great strength. Children and adults from different lifestyles, parts of the country, and physical and mental abilities are team members, learning from and respecting each other." - Nancy Stout, long-time volunteer
“I think of what we do here as the pebble in the pond. You have that rider who comes here because everybody thinks they would benefit in some way – physically or mentally or emotionally or because they just really love the animals. But you take that one person’s experience here, and it bleeds out into the whole family. It’s the pebble that creates those concentric pebbles in the pond. You never know whom you’re going to touch.” - Carol Branscome, Director
Hoofbeats is a 501(c) (3) federally tax-exempt charitable organization; donations, monetary or in-kind, are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.
