Hood Heroes began just last year, at the brink of the pandemic and mandated shutdowns of businesses. Along with that came virtual learning for students. Since students became more available during the day and spent no time in a classroom, we began to envision a community where youth were encouraged to continue educating themselves outside of the classroom all while being compensated for their time.
When I think about what the average teenage boy needs today, I think of myself. I think of what I needed as a teen. Not only that, I ask teens what they need and how I could be of support to them. Some answers I hear: a job, some good friends, a place to hang out and chill, something to do or a mentor.
Hood Heroes aims to equip, employ and walk alongside our youth as they navigate their world as teens.
As we work, we will be learning soft and hard skills: time management, integrity, conflict-resolution, budgeting and problem solving.
Our focus will be on community beautification. We will pick up trash, serve a community garden and mow lawns for elderly neighbors. With your financial support, we seek to expand from 10 teens employed last summer to 48 teens this summer.
We, Hood Heroes, hope that you will support us, donate, and follow us on this journey.
Our communities will be better because of us.
