Last month I embarked on a journey from Los Angeles to India to deepen my yoga practice and attend Marla Apt’s workshop at the Bellur Trust and the Centennial intensive honoring the 100th birthday of BKS Iyengar in Pune. In Bellur I walked into the yoga hall one day to see kids practicing their performance for the birthday celebration and I was so inspired and in awe of them that I stayed an extra day to photograph them and donate the photos to the Trust.
We made our way to Pune and I spent 5 days taking Prashant’s classes waiting each day to experience one of Geetaji’s classes, but Friday came and she hadn’t taught yet and I was scheduled to leave for a previous commitment. I was sad to miss her class but planned on coming back to Pune this year to be able to experience her teaching. Throughout the week I got updates from my friends on her phenomenal teaching and then got the message that she had suddenly passed. I was shocked and saddened by the news but also realized that it was such a gift for her to be with all her family, friends and students from around the world in her last days and to have everyone there for her funeral. I was fortunate enough to hear her speak twice while I was in Pune and was incredibly inspired.
I would like to help raise some money for the kids in Bellur in her honor. Please join me in donating whatever you feel comfortable with and pass this link along to any of your friends in the Iyengar community (or outside the community). It’s really incredible to see firsthand what the trust has built and how many villages are depending on the medical services and schools the trust is supporting.
