After her husband walked out on her, our next client, a single mother of 3 found herself unable to make rent and ended up evicted and homeless. She takes the bus everyday to get to her job as a grocery store cashier, however, wants more for her 3 girls and applied to go back to school. We met with her and were shocked by what we saw...her apartment had nothing in it except for 3 air mattresses and small piles of clothes. They share 1 towel so they are unable to shower every day.
Mom wanted her children to be in a safe (higher rent) neighborhood, so after monthly rent and utilites are paid, there is nothing left. We usually spend 2 weeks or more to get everything we need, however, we were heartbroken when we saw how dire the circumstances were...they are sleeping on air mattresses without bed pillows or sheets! We decided to move fast and will only have 5 days to get everything we need. We asked the mom what her girls "wish-list" items are and to find out if there is anything they have always wanted but couldn't have. Her answer is something none of will forget anytime soon...she said "After I asked them what they want, they didn't know how to answer because noone has ever asked them that". In other words these kids are accustomed to going without and don't even bother to dream about what they would like for themselves.
We do know that they need to purchase a computer to do schoolwork on and for mom to use for nightschool. One of the 11 year old twins not knowing how expensive "Air Force One" shoes are said she sees "all of the girls at school" wearing them and would like them and would love an ipad and Bath and Body lotion because she wants to smell nice.
PLEASE consider helping this family! We will provide EVERYTHING they need and create a warm, inviting home they can be proud of, however, because of the short timeframe, we will need to buy some of the things we don't have as well as get some "dream items" for the 3 girls. Extra funds will be used to pay for incurred moving expenses and general operating expenses associated wirh this move in. Every little bit helps and no donation is too small.
When we all do a little bit, big things can happen!!! Love, Janelle and H2H Project Team
