Your Gift Creates Precious Moments of Play!
At a Monday evening play session at one of the overflow shelter hotels on New York Avenue, seven-year-old Tori sat with five other children as they participated in a craft activity—the group was making Chinese lanterns with LED tea lights. Tori leaned close to her friend Laila and asked, "Do you have any wishes?" Laila responded with excitement, “Yes, I have wishes!” The pair took their decorated lanterns to a small corner of the playroom. They held the lighted lanterns and expressed thanks for their families. Other children grabbed their lighted lanterns and joined in, each child taking a turn to make a wish and to give thanks.
Moments like these are precious! The Homeless Children's Playtime Project's mission is to cultivate resilience in children experiencing family homelessness by providing and expanding access to transformative play experiences.
We do this by:
- Creating ongoing play opportunities that nurture healthy child development,
- Challenging systemic injustice by advocating for policies and practices that reduce the risk of chronic homelessness, and
- Connecting families with critical support services and supplies in the community to meet their concrete needs.
Help Playtime reach its $6,000 goal for a chance to win $25,000 and give more children experiences like this. Your support ensures that children ages 6 months to 7 years and preteens ages 8 to 12 at the Quality Inn overflow shelter will each get two nights to connect with a caring adult, build self-confidence, take healthy risks, solve problems creatively, develop new friendships, and enjoy a nutritious snack.
Your gift creates precious moments for children experiencing homelessness.
