In early August, I noticed that the raised garden beds in front of the Hockley County Memorial Library needed some TLC. There were no plants, very little dirt in the raised bed planters, and the area around the planters was filled with weathered gray mulch.
A small team of us from Friends of the Mosaic decided to give the area a facelift.
We removed the trash, rocks, and weathered mulch and filled in the raised beds with garden soil, potting mix, and raised bed soil. We added plants, leveled and mulched the surrounding area, planted fountain grasses, and added solar lights.
We wanted to make sure we were making wise purchases when it came to the plants we chose. Most of the plants are perennials and will come back each year. Hopefully this will significantly reduce the upkeep costs of the garden and make it more sustainable.
Volunteers with Friends of the Mosaic and the librarians at the Hockley County Library have graciously agreed to keep the garden watered this summer and fall.
The garden features:
Salvia, Coreopsis, Bougainvillea, Foxtail Fern, Dipladenia, Lemon Thyme, Rosemary, Queen Anne's Lace, etc. as well as purple fountain grass to the side of the raised gardens.
Small solar lights create a charming glow around the garden as night falls.
If you would like to help fund this effort to beautify Downtown Levelland, any donation would be greatly appreciated!
In all, between purchasing soil, mulch, and plants, the cost to make this garden area come to life was a little over $500.
Donations can be made through this GoFundMe page, or in person at Mosaic Coffee Co. located at 814 Austin St. Levelland, Tx.
