IHIH is an organization that improves the lives of kids in the Harlem community through an ice hockey league. Ice Hockey In Harlem Mission Statement Ice Hockey in Harlem’s mission is to improve the social and academic wellbeing of kids from the Harlem community. IHIH offers programming that allows children in the community to take advantage of the educational and athletic opportunities provided by youth sports. Through participation in ice hockey, IHIH student-athletes learn the fundamentals of the game, engage in an active lifestyle and broaden their life experiences.
Through an application process, there is enrollment of approximately 260 underserved students living north of 110th street, to play ice hockey at Lasker Risk in Central Park. Based off age and gender, the student body is placed on a team (mites, squirts, pee wee, 12U girls, bantam/midget) for an approximate 10 practice / 10 game season. Most students start out with the fundamentals of skating, though the IHIH learn to skate / learn to play program. Once involved in the program, those students must participate in IHIH hockey become involved in the IHIH educational programs, and maintain a satisfactory grade in school. IHIH is a bifurcated program where funds are allocated towards hockey related expenses such as rink time, equipment and tournaments and after school enrichment programming such as book club (readings after practice), college readiness (campus visits), and speaker series (professional motivational and education speakers). IHIH has the ultimate goal of having Harlem youth transition to each new phase of hockey and school, from an early age to matriculation. We believe the lessons learned in sport, the oversight and supervision of youth in a positive atmosphere, and the emphasis on their education will better the lives of everyone in the community.
There are 260 students, 53 games in 5 states, overnight college trip to BU, 19 meetings of the hockey knowledge education series, 11 inspiring speakers, Clinic with Colgate men's hockey, Lady Harlem overnight tournament trip, Ryan McDonaugh clinic, camp scholarships awarded and many lifelong friendships and memories made!
