WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The first HOBY Colorado Leadership Seminar was held in 1978. Over the years the number of participants, the location and the scope of the seminar has changed, but the vision to cultivate and empower young adults to make a positive difference in the world has remained constant. HOBY Colorado, after 40 years, continues to strive to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.
HOBY Colorado unites sophomores in high school from around the state and provides them with the opportunity to exchange ideas, engage in challenging discussions and reinforce their commitment to volunteerism and leadership. HOBY Colorado holds its annual leadership seminar on the University of Denver campus in Denver, CO. At the four-day seminar, the students participate in panels, group discussions and breakout sessions, diversity and leadership development training and a Leadership For Service Project. At the end of the seminar, all participants are challenged to put their leadership skills into action by completing at least 100 hours of service in their communities.
At our 2019 HOBY Seminar, we served 212 students from across the state! Our 2020 goal is to expand access to the HOBY Colorado seminar through our recruitment efforts and fundraising for student scholarships.
OUR IMPACT ON THE AMBASSADORS
As a result of participating in the HOBY Leadership Seminar, students gain superior critical thinking skills, the ability to identify and tap into their personal leadership strengths, improved goal-setting skills, and comprehension of, and a commitment to, leadership and service. Countless testimonials from students, parents and school staff have told us we are doing this successfully.
“My favorite part of the seminar was the small group discussions - the respect everyone showed each other was remarkable. I truly believe that so long as programs such as HOBY exist, the divide in our society will begin to be healed.” HOBY 2019 Alum, The Classical Academy Charter School
“I have never been to a conference that is so focused on self-love and affecting the community positively. I have learned that leadership is born into everyone. There is no two leaders who are alike. We are all unique based on our strengths, values, and goals. The seminar has affected me deeply. I’m really excited to share all of the knowledge I have learned and put it to use this coming year” HOBY 2019 Alum, Kit Carson High School
“One thing I hope to do because of what I learned at HOBY is to start a volunteer club at my school which can help students connect with volunteer projects and activities they are passionate about. I can’t wait to tell students all about HOBY and how it has changed me as a person, shifted my view on life, and inspired me to make a change in my community and in the world.” HOBY 2019 Alum, Coronado High School
“The most important thing I have learned so far is that nothing in life is a failure, it is just an experiment where you collected data. I also learned that being open to other people and learning where they are coming from will make us more successful so we can more effectively help others in society. My favorite part of the seminar was making sensory kits for kids in foster care through our service project.” HOBY 2019 Alum, Regis Jesuit High School - Girls Division
“I have been to leadership camps and seminars in the past, but HOBY Colorado has been a truly unique experience. Coming into HOBY, I was seeking guidance on how to implement a new program into our elementary school. The program will seek to prevent students from getting behind in school. After attending the HOBY Colorado seminar, I feel as though I now have the guidance needed to get my project moving.” HOBY 2019 Alum, Salida High School
