The Hmong people are an ethnic group living mainly in the Southeast region of Asia. In Vietnam, the Hmong people are one of the largest ethnic minorities. Many Hmong Christians are undocumented -- they were evicted from their home villages and denied essential personal papers, including household registration, ID card, marriage certificate, and, in many instances, even birth certificate. They have no access to education, employment, health care, and property rights. They are practically treated as stateless.
The Hmong Youth:
Being undocumented, many Hmong youths are unable to attend school, such as registration papers or identification. Despite this barrier, three students in Subdivision 179 in Lam Dong Province were recently able to attend school thanks to the exception made by the local authorities. These students have been cloistered in their village, which is located deep in the jungle. They have limited access to technology and sparse first-hand experience of the world beyond. Over the past months, nine Hmong students of Subdivision 179 have been learning English with the help of volunteer English teachers. We have made a plan for them to travel to Saigon in July to explore the world outside of their village, which may inspire them to strive for a better future.
The Field Trip:
The group of nine students and their chaperones will stay in Saigon, Vietnam for 5 days from July 7th to July 11th, 2021. During their stay, the students will visit local universities, embassies, government agencies, museums, and cultural centers; participate in fun, educational experiences; and meet with professionals and mentors to learn more about career opportunities. This is a one-in-a-lifetime chance for them to leave their village, and we want to inspire these nine students and future groups of Hmong youth to pursue an education, professional career, or both!
