It all started back in 2009 with an idea. We played wiffleball every day after school and we wanted to turn it into something more. How can we turn this game that we love into something we can stand behind and be proud of? This was the question we asked ourselves, in between innings of course.
By a stroke of luck and little googling, we were able to get in touch with Pat O'Connor, who has transformed his backyard into Wiffleball Heaven, and we were invited to the Blue Bulls Tournament, where we competed as the TG Avengers in the summers of 2009-2011. Money raised went to general field maintenance and upkeep in preparation for later summer charity tournaments, and while that was a great cause, we knew we could do more.
In 2013, Pat put us in contact with Jeff Kolok, who was starting his own charity wiffleball tournament to raise money for Type 1 diabetes. Instantly, we knew this was a cause that we could all get behind. Jeff had a vision to raise awareness about the hardships that T1D causes and wanted to start summer camps for kids with T1D. The camps help with connecting kids who have T1D, getting them active, and teaching them about living with T1D. From 2014-2016, we rocked amazing jerseys (best uniforms 3 years running), grew outrageous mustaches (with the exception of some of our facial hair-challenged teammates), and raised money for this great cause. After 2016, we decided to hang up the cleats for a bit as the team got busy with jobs and spread out across the country, but we knew that our job wasn't done yet.
Fast forward to 2020 and the HINGHAM U WAGONEERS ARE BACK! With the start of our 30s staring us in the face, we have decided to turn back the clock and sign up for one last SLAMT1D tournament. We will be rocking the same loud jerseys and bringing the same energy that we have in the past, though admittedly we'll probably have to stretch out and loosen up our aging joints a bit more in pregame warmups (look for knee braces to be part of our uniforms this year). The final piece of the puzzle for 2020 is help from you! While having fun and playing wiffleball at Little Fenway is its own reward, our ultimate goal is to raise as much money and awareness for SLAMT1D that we can! With your help, I know we can smash through our goal of $5000! So donate today and get ready to root for the Wagoneers as we strive to win it all (and have some fun along the way)! Join us for one last wagon ride!
