The mission of Hiking For Heroes is to raise money for charities supporting veterans and their families suffering from mental health illness, facing homelessness, and in need of assistance in various other areas. In exchange we will challenge ourselves to complete the 5-Peak Challenge in San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park in one day.
About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans. About 1.4 million other veterans are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing. A large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse, which are compounded by a lack of family and social support networks. Only 50% of returning veterans who need mental health treatment will receive services. The reported numbers are considered to be significantly lower than the effects felt in the population due to social stigma and lack of services available.
San Diego is home to the largest concentration of military personnel in the US and is the number one destination in the nation for newly returning veterans. Homeless Veterans of San Diego is a local organization that works one-on-one with veterans to provide them individual support and resources they need. Please help them continue their work in assisting these veterans as they hope for a brighter future.
