Time and again research has shown that recess has a direct impact on the learning, social development, and health of school aged children. Furthermore, it is our proposal that the quality of that play can have just as big an impact as the quantity of play time for our students. We especially see that to be true here at Highland Elementary School, where our current playground stuctures can only serve a minute percentage of our approx. 450-500 students. Our school staff has expressed a desperate need to provide additional opportunities for focused and productive play space at our school to serve the entire student body. Additionally, Highland recently became the home base for Northern Lake Stevens Structured Learning Center for Early Childhood Special Education. As we grow as a community, we would also love to dedicate focus to better serving our students with additional physical and developmental needs.
This is why we've chosen to fundraise to build a brand new playground structure! This playground structure will be an addition, rather than a replacement to our current playground -- presenting important added space and opportunities for play. This new playground addition will not only meet the additional play needs of our school in general, but will also exceed the current American Disability Association schedule of accessible play activities.
There are several opportunities to get involved in a project of this scope & scale, and all of them can have a huge impact on the success of bringing PLAY to Highland Elementary!
