HPMS's "Run the Extra Mile" charity event is organized and hosted by WE School students at Highland Park Middle School in Dallas, TX. Inspired by the WE Volunteer Now speakers who presented to the 7th grade in February 2017, the students have continuously sought ways to raise money to help fight hunger in Kenya. Last year, the group raised $2800 at 2018's "Run the Extra Mile," and this year, our goal is to raise $3000. We also held a candy drive this past fall where the students raised $686! By partnering with WE Villages, all proceeds and sponsorship money from this event will be used to fund sustainable food projects in Kenya.

Kenya is a beautiful country of sweeping savannahs, dense forests, snow-capped highlands, and palm-lined coasts. With its beauty and abundant wildlife comes booming tourism and, in some places, great wealth. But there is also great poverty.
Almost 30 percent of Kenyans live on less than $1.25 a day, which the World Bank classifies as extreme poverty. Twenty-six percent of Kenyan children between the ages of five and 14 are child laborers. A quarter of Kenyan girls under the age of 15 are married.
16 years ago WE began partnering with the Maasai and Kispigis communities in the Narok South District of southwestern Kenya. Together, we have built schools, libraries, water projects, latrines, kitchens and teacher accommodations. Community leaders supported our development and education projects, and implemented active women’s, men’s and youth groups.
