Tyler was always in trouble. By age 11 he was arrested for robbery trying to help provide for his family. His probation officer had heard about Higher Ground’s Youth Success Center and knew that this may be Tyler’s only chance for a better life.
The Youth Success Center, a 5-week program in collaboration with the Pima County Juvenile Court Center teaches youth on probation Social Emotional Learning, Grit and Self Control through physical activity. At the end of 5 weeks the youth have the opportunity to continue at Higher Ground.
Remember Tyler? He was one of those students who got involved in our Judo/Jujitsu program going on to compete and won a gold medal. He had found his passion in life—but at the end of his 5-week program, he was unable to continue at Higher Ground. His family didn’t have a car.
