Since 2002, Hidalgo Ministries has been reflecting Jesus' love to the children and families of the Hidalgo apartment community, a 97% Hispanic apartment community in the Bachman Lake area of Dallas. Meeting first outside, then in vacant apartments, then in our own apartment, we eventually discovered that the communities' 2-story clubhouse building had been left trashed and boarded up for over 5 years. Renovating it at mostly our cost allowed us to take over the building as our ministry center. We started with the large social room upstairs. That's now where we bring kids and families for our main weekly indoor activities. A small laundry room was turned into a classroom downstairs. Around 800 sq. feet of space is still left boarded up downstairs. A fundraiser and renovation's first steps in 2018 was halted due to problems with ADA (American Disability Act). After losing our architect and eventually gaining another, we eventually discovered that we were grandfathered in and could move forward without the ADA challenges. By this time, construction costs had increased beyond our budget, so we were left searching for options. A new contractor with a bid that was within reach has given us the incentive to raise the additional funds needed to renovate the space and turn those 800 sq. feet into 3 new meeting rooms and a bathroom. This will allow us, for example, to split our K-6th grade Kids Club into various age groups and not all be stuck in the same room during small group times. Moms could meet while their kids are in kids club also. Teens could meet simultaneously with ESL or parenting classes.
If you have a heart for community transformation--both spiritually and socially--we'd love your partnership on this project (or with Hidalgo Ministries ongoing)!
