The Hickok Center for Brain Injury, Inc. has proudly been serving adults with brain injury & other neurological challenges in the Greater Rochester community for over 30 years. It has always been our first priority to help in supporting the health & safety of our program participants. While the Coronavirus has impacted the Hickok Center and the world around us in many unexpected ways, it is because of the perseverance of our participants & staff that we were able to tailor our approach to services, but we need your Help now more than ever, to Give a Little & Give for Good to help support our Mission & the Journey of all of our Participants.
As an agency we have been extremely fortunate over the past many months that the Coronavirus has not impacted the health and safety of our program participants or staff. However, it has not spared us the financial hardships and feelings of uncertainty that we as a community have been facing. In March, like many other local businesses we had to make the difficult decision to close our doors. For what we thought would be 2 weeks, became 4 months, and just like everyone else the Hickok Center had to adapt. In the initial weeks of our closure we remained connected to our participants through Interactive & Informative Posts on Facebook and Wellness Calls to ensure that they had the resources they needed to manage during this time as well as offer a Friendly Voice and Conversation to break up the day. Not being able to attend program disrupted daily routines, increased depression & isolation, and the goals & skill building they incorporate into their day had nearly halted. For our vocational clients without the assistance of their employment specialists, job opportunities were left up in the air and vocational skills development became stagnant. We soon discovered that these wellness calls were simply not enough and in May we were able to Develop and Launch Virtual Programming and our participants and staff were able to reconnect via Zoom.
This virtual connection allowed everyone to see and socialize with one another again during Morning Coffee Hour. Hot Topic & Educational Discussion Groups and Competitive Brain Games & Trivia began again. Our staff delivered Activity Kits to their homes so participants could continue with Art Therapy and our very own “Hickok Tool Time”. Even our Adaptive Yoga group began again giving participants the opportunity to continue strengthening their mind, body and spirit. Vocational clients also made the adjustment to the virtual world and with help from employment specialists continued Job Searches and Applications, developed a New “Virtual” Skillset and several were able to continue interviewing and become Employed even amidst the pandemic. In July, we were finally able to safely reopen to providing onsite and in person services and bring our Hickok Family back together. While this took a little time and patience from our participants and staff to get used to all our new safety measures, in true Hickok fashion we made it all work, and most importantly all of our participants and staff have remained healthy and safe.
Fast forward a few months and the familiarity of our day to day and a sense of normalcy has returned even with face masks and social distancing. Despite this, some of our participants have not returned to program yet due to concerns about the Coronavirus and with the ever looming uncertainty this pandemic poses to all of us We Need Your Help Today to ensure that we are able to continue providing the safe and supportive environment that they use to design and direct their own life journey!
We invite you to Join us for our Online Give a Little & Give for Good Event. Over the next several weeks follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter where we will be sharing stories and testimonials from participants and other members of our Hickok Center Family. We will also have many exciting Raffle Baskets up for grabs. For every $20 donation you will receive an entry for that week’s raffle basket (A donation of $100 gets you 5 entries!!!!) We hope that this will also allow us to connect with all of you so please make sure you like and comment on our posts!!!
So, from the Hickok Center Family to all of you, we are grateful to have you as a part of our journey and we thank you for your support. It is our greatest hope that you all remain happy, safe, and healthy!
