On Wednesday, March 31st 2021 two of our volunteers received a phone call about a Mama Goat and her baby in distress. Upon arriving at the farm they were met with a Mama goat that was walking on her front knees due to the condition of her hooves. She was severely malnourished and her hooves were curling over, the baby was constantly feeding on her mom but she was also very thin. Initially being an assessment situation our volunteers were not prepared to bring mama and baby home that night but made the split decision to bring them to the farm due to the condition they were in, they loaded her up in the backseat of their truck and headed for HHH. She was guarded and scared but instantly came up to the volunteers and let them take a look at her and baby.
A vet was called out the next morning and Mama got her hooves trimmed- we believe she likely has never had her hooves trimmed before due to how long her hooves were and how difficult she was being. Her and baby also received multiple vaccines, dewormer and a feeding plan to help them gain weight. The vet advised that it would take her some time to get used to walking correctly again and believed she had been on her knees for months prior due to the amount of liquid and scarring on her knees. Mama also had an old infected wound on her side that needed to be lanced and washed out- she received antibiotic injections to help with healing.
Fast forward to almost a month later- Mama and baby are doing wonderful. They have gained weight and mama is producing lots of milk to keep her baby strong and growing! Baby loves to run around and is very curious with the other animals around the farm. Mama is very friendly and follows our volunteers around as they do their chores. They truly feel safe and happy at HHH.
We appreciate any amount to go towards their vet bill and continued care.
