I’m running the NYC Half Marathon next Sunday, March 17. As my charity partner for this race, I’ve chosen to raise funds on behalf of The Herren Project. Although I have not personally battled addiction, I unfortunately witnessed firsthand this past year the pain it causes when a close friend of mine struggled with an addiction to prescription pain medication following an injury. In talking about the experience, I’ve discovered just how many of those in my life have also know someone who has dealt with a similar battle - whether a friend, family member, etc. In 2017, for the first time, opioid overdoses became the #1 cause of accidental death in the United States, outnumbering even car crashes. According to the CDC, over 130 die as a result each day, and nearly 30% of those with a prescription for opioid pain medication misused the drugs. The Herren Project - founded in 2011 by former basketball player Chris Herren - works to both raise awareness and support recovery from substance abuse disorders.
