Now, more than ever, Counseling In Schools (CIS) needs your support so we can continue to help lower income children and families who are severely impacted by the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.
For over 30 years, CIS, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York City, has placed mental health professionals in schools and homeless shelters, providing emotional support to children and their families. CIS has helped thousands of children overcome trauma. Today the fear, isolation and the loss of family income caused by the COVID-19 crisis is overwhelming.
During the current crisis, dedicated and compassionate CIS staff are providing critically needed support at the frontlines, including:
- Beginning a program to get food to children in need. While the City has been providing take-a-way food at schools, many families are not getting the food because they are being told to stay inside. CIS is organizing and paying local grocery stores to deliver food to these families.
- CIS staff are at New York City Centers where families of essential City workers can drop off their children while they do their best to protect us. These brave and inspiring CIS staff members have volunteered to do this vital work, despite the risk to their own health.
- CIS staff have received training in the educational platforms New York City public schools will be using to remotely teach and stay in contact with students.
- CIS is also collecting email addresses and cell phone numbers of children they have been working with in schools and homeless shelters as another way to help them deal with the crisis.
As we continue to do our work, CIS staff have been personally impacted by the virus. Several staff members have symptoms and are being tested. Despite the personal risks, CIS staff are working very long days to continue to help children and their families during a crisis that may last months.
CIS needs contributions now.
