This letter by far is the most urgent I have written in the decade or so I have been executive director of Young Urban Christians and Artists, Inc. The coronavirus outbreak is undoubtedly raging havoc on everyone. The south Bronx teenagers we serve are at risk of losing the few educational opportunities afforded them, in and outside of school like never before. It’s why we need you to make a donation of any amount today to reach our goal of $10,000 in order continue our work in helping YUCA students “Beat the Odds!”
Aside from its immediate health threat, COVID-19 is forcing us all to practice social distancing which has resulted in keeping youth out of school for the remainder of the year. In the face of a high degree of disruption from the impact of the virus and resulting public health responses, YUCA has chosen to temporarily suspend studio classes and instead provide art programming via online instruction. In order to accomplish this, we have begun to design a new curriculum. Virtual, online sessions are currently underway.
Further, YUCA has responded to this problem by providing a 6-week program of online arts education for 45 students, offering a series of workshops that include Basic and Advanced Drawing and Painting, Portfolio Development, Arts Entrepreneurship, and Principles in Graphic Design. YUCA has hired additional artists to teach these sessions, provide art supply packets to registered students – including pads, paints, brushes, and a host of other materials, and with your help move forward in purchasing laptop computers for students who are currently unable to participate. With your generous donation, all YUCA participants will have the materials and equipment they can use at home, and ensure that our most impoverished students have an internet-ready device to join our online classes. That is why I am writing to you today.
As YUCA’s costs continue to rise, our ability to provide students an essential creative outlet and new technical skills they need in making positive change in the community is greatly helped by your charitable support. No one knows what youth and their families can expect when schools finally reopen, especially in lieu of the scarce art programming that existed in public schools prior to the pandemic. As COVID-19 maintains a prolonged strangle-hold over our city, it does not have to be at the expense of denying talented and eager youth art educational opportunities they would otherwise have.
Help us help south Bronx teenagers “Beat the Odds!” by making an urgently needed contribution today. You can make a difference in the life of a young artist by selecting one of the committment options described and listed below.
You can help to make so much good happen at YUCA – from providing students with an essential creative outlet and new technical skills, to making available opportunities to explore social justice issues through the creative production process, leading students to greater social consciousness and illuminating their potential as activists to affect positive change in their communities.

PS– We’re family at YUCA. Each and every student in our program means the world to us, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support. Please enjoy YUCA merch as part of your donation gift (see above photo) as a token of our appreciation for partnering with us. Your gift today will make a big difference in how successful we are in reaching our goal of $10,000, thus making sure all YUCA students have a chance to “Beat the Odds!”
