We are very excited to announce a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—An anonymous donor has agreed to match any funds we can raise between now and December 30th—up to $15,000– to purchase a multi-function school activity bus for our high school. To make this happen, we need your help!
For many years, Walden has relied on volunteers, parents and teachers to help transport students to and from our expeditionary activities. As you know, off-campus experiences, service learning and expeditionary learning are integral components of a well-rounded and meaningful Walden student educational experience.
In speaking with teachers over the years, they agree that one of the barriers, (if not the biggest) barrier), to creating meaningful and exciting off campus experiences for students is the difficulty of transporting students. Right now, educators rely on their own (often small) vehicles and on parent volunteers in order to take students anywhere. Even when teachers are able to plan meaningful and exciting opportunities, they can’t always carry them out because most parents work. It is difficult to find volunteers during the day. Additionally, The State of Utah does not provide us transportation funding and it is illegal for schools to use large passenger vans. The odds have always kind of been stacked against us when it comes to transportation.
Now for the exciting news! We found out this past week that we can purchase a smaller 15-passenger bus for student activity transportation. About the same time, miraculously, an anonymous donor agreed to match any money up to $15,000 towards purchasing “The Walden School Bus” now through the end of the year. This is where we need your help! We recognize that this is not an ideal time of year to be asking for such donations, but we would be remiss if we didn’t do everything in our power to obtain this bus for your students. If you are able to donate, or are aware of any businesses/philanthropists looking for a worthy cause this time of year, consider donating to our bus fund!
Just last year, we were able to rent a bus for the day ($700 for one day’s rental) in order to take the entire high school population to the University of Utah for a field trip. It was at this time that we really understood how impactful a bus could be. Being able to take students on more field trips opens the door to so many possibilities for our students. At the end of this field trip, students reflected on their experience. So many of them expressed a newfound excitement about the possibility of attending college. This was just one field trip. We are giddy at the thought of how many more life-changing experiences we will be able to provide for students once we own a bus!
Thank you again for considering Walden’s important cause. ALL donations are tax deductible.
