St. Vincent de Paul's St. Maximilian Kolbe Conference serves the poor, the disenfranchised, the marginalized, those of low income, and the working poor along our Gulf Coast of Mississippi. With more than 400,000 people living and working along our coastal communities, economically, Mississippi is one of the poorest states in our country. We are in-need a homeless shelter and a means of financially supporting the shelter.
The St. Maximilian Kolbe Conference has a long-term goal of reducing the homeless population in the six southernmost counties. At any given time, there are about 400 homeless in our communities. Although men above the age of 55 remain the largest and most visible group, women, and women with children, are a close second. Women, families and youth lack adequate facilities for respite and care. For many, current disbursed shelters are only open to provide overnight respite during cold weather and hurricanes. With only two abused women's shelters, both have limited capacities. If a female's not been abused, has her children with her, or her spouse, there are only two temporary rooms in a converted residential home, if they are available. Most sleep-in door stoops, behind dumpsters, in cars, in the woods, or in abandon structures. Many have no shelter at all.
Working with other social service agencies, a collaborative, wholistic, approach is needed within our coastal communities. The cost to develop a new homeless shelter can exceed $ 20 Million Dollars. The cost to renovate a building depends a lot on the location, what's existing, and what's planned. Renovating a building can cost from as little as $1.5 Million Dollars to as much as a new building. Without having established funding relationships, we will initially develop relationships through the acquisition of smaller grants funding disbursed community-based social services as an integral part of our developing SVDP thrift stores project. We are initially taking a steppingstone approach by developing smaller social services in our communities that will fill needed gaps within our communities. These will later feed a full service, centrally located, SVDP Homeless Shelter. We will initially develop community-based services in several communities across the Gulf Coast. With your help, these services will be housed within our developing SVDP Thrift Stores.
Both a SVDP Homeless Shelter and our disbursed community social services will provide needed community services, along with the jobs, clothing, food, personal assistance and a sense of purpose that our thrift stores will provide. A centralized SVDP Homeless Shelter will be capable of providing: temporary respite; food; clothing; counseling; addiction management; medical care; pharmaceutical assistance; education and language assistance; Job training and assistance; and other needed services, such as the Federal Government’s Rapid Rehousing program and spiritual support. Our community-based social services would collaborate with existing services to be capable of provide many of these services. These services would help to stabilize people, getting them into long-term permanent, affordable, housing. With your help as our project progresses, we will be able to collaborate with other charitable, community, government, and civic organizations.
As an integral part of our funding plan we will utilize internet media, perform relationship marketing, market to corporate philanthropy, and to apply for Foundation Grants. This effort is a part of our internet marketing. Initially, grants we will be eligible for will be small. This will aid in establishing relationships with funding sources to develop our community-based social services and thrift store operations. To apply for direct or matching grants, we need to meet a foundation's criteria. To get to the point of initially applying for our first grant, it is estimated that we will need, at minimum, $ 25K. This is our goal for this fundraiser. We appreciate your helping us to help others in-need.
