As we prepare to move the zoo, transportation becomes a very critical issue. We are raising funds in order to fabricate Two (maybe three) squeeze/transport crates. One crate will be constructed for the black bears and grizzlies and the other crate will be used for mountain lions and snow leopards. If our funding permits, we may even purchase a small one for raccoons and other small mammals.
These crates have great value as a behavior training tool. They will be used as behavioral husbandry tools, making medical procedures much easier and less traumatic for our animals. Our animal care goal at the zoo is to provide the best care possible for our animals in the least invasive way. Training our large mammals to use a squeeze-transfer crate will provide an endless opportunity to assess the health of our larger animals. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
