Natalie is a gorgeous 9-year-old lab mix who came to Bellwether Harbor from another shelter. She tested positive for heartworm, requires extensive dental work, and has a complex kidney condition that will require medication and a special food for the rest of her life. Despite all her health issues, she is the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. She enjoys helping out around the office, napping, and showing off her toothless smile!
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworms that live inside the dog mature into adults, mate, and produce offspring. If untreated, their numbers can increase, and dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs, and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. For this reason, prevention is by far the best option, and treatment—when needed—should be administered as early in the course of the disease as possible. The treatment for heartworm disease is grueling and dangerous. It requires medication, limited activity, and close monitoring by a veterinarian to help reduce the risk of a fatal complication.
Once Natalie has recovered from heartworm treatment, she will need oral surgery and a treatment plan for her kidneys. Expenses will add up quickly, so we are aiming for to help cover these costs. Natalie is facing an uphill battle, but we think she deserves the chance to get healthy and live the rest of her life with family of her own.
