The All Saints Catholic Church Shawa is a Catholic Church situated at Shawa Village in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State; Nigeria. The Church has been in existence for more than five decades, serving the spiritual needs of the local catholic population. It has a congregation strength of about 200 families mostly drawn from the Shawa Community. In its early days, the Church building comprised of a thatched hut mounted on wooden beams. The pews consisted of logs of wood mounted on fork-like tree branches or placed on the ground. This modest structure served as the church for a long time until a new church was built in the 1998. This hall was built with mud bricks and roofed with corrugated iron sheets. The building was made possible by the efforts of the local congregation with support from generous donors who contributed towards the roofing of the church. This effort was coordinated by Very Rev. Fr. Stephen Ishor who was the Parish Priest at St. Patrick’s Parish, Taraku; the overseeing parish for All Saints, Shawa at the time. Constructed without stable materials such as cement, the walls of the church collapsed many times and were rebuilt on all occasions until the year 2017 when more than half of the walls collapsed, bringing down the roof of the church, making it impossible for the church to be rebuilt. The collapse of the church building forced the worshipping community to take refuge under a Classroom at the nearby RCM Primary School, Shawa where they worship till date. To find a permanent solution, the community conceived a new church building which is presently at an advanced stage of construction, just besides the old church building. It has proper architectural drawings and has employed professional workers who are currently working on this project. This project is primarily being funded by generous donors. Initially, the church was under the administrative control of the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Parish, Taraku, until recently when the Divine Mercy Catholic Mission, Howe, was created out of the old St. Patrick’s Parish, Taraku, all in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State Nigeria. The All Saints Catholic Church Shawa is now overseen by the Divine Mercy Catholic Mission, Howe. The Church is led by a lay Church Leader appointed by the Parish Priest of Divine Mercy Catholic Mission, Howe Fr. Michael Akura. Fr Michael is currently the Administrator, says Masses here regularly as well as administer the Other sacraments.
