Who We Are:
Picture This is a small non-profit that my husband and I started when we visited the Philippines after Typhoon Yolanda hit in 2013. When there, we fell in love with a small fishing village called La Jala. Traveling and connecting with locals from other countries around the world is a deep passion of ours and has become one of the most impactful parts of our lives. We wanted to create a program where American families could get a taste of that cultural experience too, while finding ways to empower and support the children in La Jala. We started a pen pal program you can read more about below, along with other specific ways we give back. We have seen a HUGE impact from our program already, but we have dreams to do even more! For example: Bring a dental/medical team to La Jala, hire more tutors, and create a sponsorship program. See below for our immediate needs your donations will go towards.
School Boat Assistance:
Picture this runs a school boat system for the children who can't afford public transport so they may have the ability to go to school every day.
Salary for Boat Captains who take our kids to and from the Island where school is ($466.79 / month)
Gas: ($2400 / year)
Annual Boat Maintenance: This cost varies from year to year. If you know anything about boats, you know there's always maintenance & repairs to be done.
Pen Pal Program Assistance:
Our pen pal program gives the kids of La Jala an incentive to stay in school, ignites social skills and confidence, and give an opportunity to strengthen their English. English is a necessary tool for them to flourish in their touristic economy. The unique friendships created through pen pals broadens both the Filipino and American pal's worldviews, cultivating empathy for people different than themselves. By connecting these students with a window to the rest of the world, they are given the ability to dream bigger and believe in themselves as capable individuals that can surpass the cycles many feel trapped in. Below are the costs of running our pen pal program.
Pen pal mailing shipments to and from the Philippines about every 3 months: ($6,800 / year)
Picture This gatherings that provide the children with crafts, tutoring, and a nutritious meal: ($1600 / year)
One of the biggest problems the people of La Jala face is the poverty cycle many seem to get stuck in. By giving kids the ability to stay in school, we give them an opportunity to break the cycle. COVID has shut all the schools down, so we would love your help to gather the resources needed to reopen the schools. These resources include:
Thermal Scanners ($292.08 for 6)
300 reusable masks for students and staff ($306.00)
Sanitary stations for hand washings ($300 / 20 large alcohol sanitizer)
Printer to give teachers the ability to print assignments to send out while home school is necessary ($142.50)
School Sponsorship Program:
(NEW PROGRAM WE HOPE TO START WITH YOUR HELP)
School sponsorships are not an expense that is included in our average yearly spending, but we would like to use your donations to help the 44 kids that are on the waiting list to be sponsored. Cost to put a child through school is:
($300 / school year) Per child (thats only $30 for the 10 months they go to school out of the year.)
