For over 55 years the Friends of the Salem Public Library have augmented the City’s General Fund support of the Library, supplementing the Library’s resources and extending the Library’s reach!
Until recently, to raise money we operated our used Bookstore inside the Library. In addition we sold books online and held large semi-annual and smaller periodic Book Sales.
Then, thanks to the generosity of the people of Salem, a bond was passed to retrofit the Library for earthquake safety. For the duration of construction, the Library moved to its much smaller temporary location on Broadway St. NE and we opened our Bookstore a block and a half south. This was an extremely expensive transition. Moving costs and related expenses as well as store rent and utilities have had a huge impact on our funds.
Then COVID hit. This virus has struck the Salem area with a vengeance. Our Bookstore income is down due to mandated closures, reduced hours, and reduced traffic. Until COVID is under control we cannot have large “Book Sale” events.
We are asking for your help.
We want to be able to continue to support the Library, to continue to underwrite the Summer Reading Program and other activities for children, teens, and adults, to be able to help with new and exciting materials for the Discovery Room re-opening as well as continue our support of the Lucky Day collection of books, CDs and DVDs. We are also helping to expand the Adult and Teen Fiction Collections for the Grand Re-opening.
Please contribute what you can and spread the word. All these years, we have raised funds with your support and by the hard work of the Friends Board, innumerable volunteers, and our Store Manager.
You've been with us all along. Thank you. We know this is an unorthodox way for us to ask for help, but we're in increasingly dire straits without a clear end in sight.
We need to raise a minimum of $80,000. We need this money not only to help fund those programs and collections the public has come to love, but to ensure we can meet our basic expenses and continue to contribute into the future.
We pledge to keep you in the loop. Please see our website for updates on how we will be using the money.
So, would you please be a friend to the Friends ?
(As we are a nonprofit, a 501C3, your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.)
Thank you so much !!!
