During the pandemic Taking the Reins continues to serve our students. We provide robust boxes of produce feeding 31 of our lowest-income families. We also continue safe outdoor hiking, gardening, horse riding and care, as well as many virtual classes and emotional support.
Located minutes from Downtown L A, Taking the Reins is an amazing Los Angeles based non-profit which provides under resourced children a safe space to experience the restorative power of nature. Over 600 students a year learn about farm animals, gardening, environmental science and healthy nutrition. They fall in love with our 15 horses as they learn the life lesson horsemanship provides!
For 22 years TTR has served over 4,000 youth throughout Los Angeles, with 80% growing up in poverty. Children are referred to our program from LAUSD Title 1 schools, foster care programs, boys and girls clubs, organizations serving the homeless, and self-referral. As our founders intended, TTR is primarily a girls empowerment program. Almost 400 girls a year, 8 - 18, are encouraged to ‘Take the Reins’ of their own growth and futures. They learn about fitness and healthy eating in our Seed to Skillet Garden program. Students are supported in developing leadership skills. They learn the value of responsibility and teamwork as part of a diverse group of young women that share a passion for nature and animal science while learning to thrive creatively and academically.
Beyond the core group of students served by TTR, the non-profit also offers field trips, education workshops, job fairs and urban camping experiences to boy and girl scout groups, local schools, other LA based non-profits. In 2019, there were 210 students that attended TTR for summer camp and workshop/field trip experiences.
Currently Taking the Reins is still operating in the same 600 sq ft office and 1935 deteriorating wooden barn and septic system, as we did when we had less than 100 students a year and five horses. WE HAVE OUT GROWN OUR SPACE and our Barn has been deemed as a TEARDOWN!
The Good News
1.Taking the Reins owns its property!
2.TTR's location is designated as a historic equestrian area by the City of Los Angeles
3.Housing development cannot overtake our Agricultural and Equestrian zoning directly adjacent to Griffith Park.
4.We have already completed $600,000 worth of infrastructure and barn building. This includes sewer, electric, grading, water meter and lines, as well as a 6000 sq foot roof and 13 stalls.
How can you help? Donate!
We are seeking $150,000 to provide funding for our 1600 sq ft new office and education center.
Your tax-deductible donation ensures that children in Los Angeles will have a farm, equestrian and education center to call their own into perpetuity.
