Camp Lilac is a summer camp in Ohio for transgender and gender diverse youth, intended to be a safe space for them to be themselves. Launched at the beginning of 2017, Camp Lilac had its first successful session in August of 2017, and even more successful sessions in August of 2018 and June of 2019. Thanks to fundraising, we were able to provide scholarships so that every kid who wanted to attend was able. As a non-profit, we rely on camper tuition to fund every aspect of camp. Because many of our campers are low-income, they rely on scholarships to be able to pay that tuition. We do not want cost to be a barrier to anyone, so we strive to offer scholarships to all who need it.
Camp Lilac has used the same space since we opened three years ago, and in that time the cost to rent it has tripled. This year, we are aiming to purchase our own space, which will enable us to avoid the steadily increasing rent, as well as providing opportunities for year round activities. To do that, we will need to rely on both fundraisers and grants, as spaces that suit our needs do not come cheap.
All of our summer camp staff currently attend camp on a volunteer basis. The hard work they put into creating a safe and welcoming space for our campers goes above and beyond what should be asked of volunteers, and we would love to be able to pay them in future years. As a non-profit, the funds we have at our disposal are entirely reliant on grants and donations, and so your donation will help us make paying our staff in future years possible.
Camp Lilac does its best to accommodate all dietary needs, serving vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and other allergies and sensitivities. Campers can choose to learn kitchen skills and help prepare food for the camp community. We aim to provide quality food and learning experiences for our campers, and in order to do that we need to have the support of a strong food budget.
Summer camp involves lots of fun activities, like swimming, boating, ropes course, rock climbing, archery, arts and crafts, journaling and more! Many of those activities require supplies or have associated fees. As a camp for gender diverse youth, Camp Lilac also tries to accommodate specific gender affirming needs of our campers, such as providing gender affirming clothing and undergarments for those who cannot access them at home. In addition to these camp-related supplies, some of our campers arrive without certain necessities, such as bedding, towels, bathing suits, etc. and Camp Lilac works to provide for those needs as well. Your donations will help us to provide adequate resources for campers in coming years.
