In late January 2019, S.O.A.R. Initiative was chosen to partner with a grant through Indy Humane's Animal Welfare Clinic. Through April 15, 2019, we have helped coordinate the spay/neuter, vaccinations and microchips for over 400 cats and dogs for families in need of financial assistance. 99% of the families provided their own transportation to the clinic for their pets and 98% of all owners showed for their appointments.
Many of the pets have never had previous vet care. Through these appointments, owners were given diagnosis information about their pets including heart murmurs, ectropion diagnoses, and vaginal prolapses to name a few. SOAR also learns more about clients who might need some extra help. SOAR's outreach teams then provide care education, food, supplies and other assistance.
Many of these pet owners were concerned about the spay/neuter procedure. However, connecting with the coordinator and knowing what to expect, eased their minds. Also, knowing that friends and family had their pets go through this program provided some comfort as well.
Our spay/neuter assistance program is meant to focus on cats and Pit Bull type dogs due their high numbers in our shelters; however, we will help wherever needed. There are no location requirements. Some of the clients have traveled from Henry, Clay, Morgan, and Tippecanoe Counties. We also do not limit the number of pets that a family can have treated through our program. Our goal is to have every pet in the home spay/neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped.
Some may ask why microchips are included - if a pet is lost, this will help ensure that it will get back safely to its family. It also acts as an incentive for some who are hesitant on spay/neuter. Indiana State Law requires that dogs and cats have the rabies vaccine and the pet specific vaccine helps to ensure good health.
SOAR has a volunteer spay/neuter coordinator who will continue to schedule, remind and educate our spay/neuter assistance clients.
We would love to continue offering this program to others. In order to do so, we must receive additional monetary support.
